It's nice to see him being rewarded for all his hard work.
My boyfriend, Andrew Gardineer, received 2 stripes today on his brown belt from Giva Santana! Andrew has donated his time for many years teaching jiu jitsu at Siege MMA. He trains hard, competes (and wins) frequently. Andrew's life is Jiu Jitsu and I'm happy that I get to be a part it!

![]() Girls are really starting to populate the world of Jiu JItsu!! The number of women who competed at the Worlds this year was 374. In 2010, there were only 176 ladies in the contest. When I started training at Siege, there were only 2 girls (this included me) that trained on a regular basis. I have been teaching an all girls class every Friday and Sunday and we have been averaging about 12 girls per class. In addition to this we also now have several girls training regularly in our co-ed classes. Its great to see so many girls taking an interest and I'm looking forward to having larger divisions when competing. ![]() This morning I got the chance to roll with Giva Santana. Giva is a third degree black belt under Lotus Club from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Giva is the head Jiu Jitsu trainer for Team Oyama in Irvine CA. Giva came out yesterday to teach classes at Siege and will be here teaching all week. It was great to have the opportunity to roll with him although I got really nervous and felt like I forgot my game. lol :/ Giva taught a great class today! I'm excited to get to take his classes the rest of the week. If your a member at Siege, don't miss out!! My daughter did a great job today! With only a few months of training, she was matched up against a nova uniao girl with over a year of experience, she was beat on points. Great job Tori! Keep up the training and go get em next time! She did how-ever make "Gracie Mag" pretty sweet!!! Congrats to my teammates! You all did great today! Brought home the BLING!
State championship day 1: two tough matches!! I took silver in my division and bronze in the open weight. No gold today but, I got an opportunity to compete against 2 very tough girls Nana and Maria which I've been looking forward to since I started training. Congrats to my son Tyson too! Bronze in his weight class and a VERY hard open weight! It's my daughter Tori's turn to compete tomorrow!
Well, tomorrow is the big day! I will compete against the top two blue belts in AZ. Between the two of them they consistently take gold in their weight division as-well as the open and have both had their blue belts for quit some time. I'm excited to finally be able to compete against them. It would be a big accomplishment for me to win! Wish me luck!!
My son Tyson also competes tomorrow and my daughter Toriana on Sunday. Lotus club has 10 competitors for this tournament. Good luck to you all! Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is valuable for women in particular: domestic violence, including physical and sexual abuse, is far too prevalent in the US and abroad, and most of the time, the victims are women. Most girls growing up aren't taught to be tough physically, we aren't taught how to throw a punch, or to fight back. We're "supposed" to be sweet and gentle and kind.
But, unfortunatly for most of us physical or sexual assault and violence has touched all of our lives in some way. Some of us have been victims, some of us have had loved ones who have been victims and all of us have heard stories of victims. Just the thought of it makes us feel uncomfortable, vulnerable and even afraid. Jiu Jitsu, how ever helps women to be pro-active in order to prevent attack situations, and, in the unfortunate and rare event of an actual attack situation, to provide women with a plan of action and the necessary training to successfully defend themselves and get away. Normally when a woman gets attacked, the attacker is not trying to box or kick-box with her. The attacker most likely wants to grab her and control her movements and this often includes taking her to the ground. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is perfect for that type of confrontation. Women learn how to escape, hold, control, and submit an opponent from the ground.Using the principles of leverage and angles, BJJ equips women with the defensive tools required to subdue or escape a larger or stronger person’s aggression. |
