As a parent with a child with ADHD, I feel very frustrated with our "system"! My son has been on medication for over a year and is doing great, unfortunately, there is not a lot of support or options for parents with children who need medication for mental disorders (CLEARLY)!!! I have recently started a new job and no longer qualify for insurance because I make too much money (hahaha) and apparently "too much money" is over $500 a month. Who could even live, much less support a child on that amount? I see now why so many children (and adults) go un-treated. Medication: $172.00 per month Dr. visit (which is mandatory to receive medication): $220.00 a month Classes: $80.00 per month Having sanity in your life because your child is responding well to treatment: PRICELESS!!! It's easy to see why many parents with children who need help don't work and use "the system". Sadly for those of us who don't have that option and want more for their lives and their children (and cant survive on $500 a month) there are no benefits! While looking into private insurance, I found nothing under $150.00 per month and doesn't cover any of the above needs my son has. There needs to be some help for people who have been diagnosed (or need to be). What happened last Friday is on a much bigger scale but, going untreated many people are walking around in an unstable mental state. An even bigger problem (but, one I could have to deal with in 10 yrs) is getting treatment for your adult children. It seems the only help they can receive is being put in jail, where they have no help, AFTER they have committed a crime. And, with the HIPPA laws parents have their hands tied. They can't seek help for their adult child, report if things don't seem right, find out if they are taking the "right" meds (or any). There needs to be some changes!! I've heard of some strange grappling competitions , but this one is something special. Couples matches. Yep, what you just imagined in your head is exactly what's happening here. The tournament organizer finds either a boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife team and then finds another couple to grapple against them. It is man vs man and then woman vs woman. The match is not one by one individual but a combination of the two couples scores. I first found out about these 'couple's matches' at Inspire (all girls open mat) from Mackenzie Dern . Mackenzie and boyfriend Augusto Tanquinho will be taking on Davi Ramos and girlfriend Marina Riberio this month. Tanquinho takes on Davi first. Mackenzie and Marina take to the mat next, and rather than start with a zero-zero score, they pick up with the points where the men left off. If the first match ended in submission, the girlfriend of the beaten combatant will have to get the tapout in order to even the score. With more and more couples popping up in the Jiu Jitsu and MMA scene these matches may become more and more popular. Dating within' the gym used to be a big NO but, by looking at the growing numbers of the BBJ relationships, it seems to be more of a relationship builder then a bad idea. Being able to understand the long hours and dedication is defiantly a huge plus! Having someone to "try out" new moves on, knowing which gi can go in the dryer and which can't, understanding who scored the points, why you wake up in a head and arm choke, why "date night" has to be at a place showing the fights, why your crying in the shower after an off night, why your boyfriend/girlfriend has "hickies" in strange places, why your submitting house-hold objects or putting the family pet in a triangle (or your child) haha (you know you've all done it)!! Here's to you all! Keep making it work! I also wanted to mention Mackenzie received her black belt today! Awesome to see females progressing in BJJ! Congrats Mackenzie! and of coarse...... couldn't leave this couple out ;) |
