Couples matches. Yep, what you just imagined in your head is exactly what's happening here. The tournament organizer finds either a boyfriend/girlfriend or husband/wife team and then finds another couple to grapple against them. It is man vs man and then woman vs woman. The match is not one by one individual but a combination of the two couples scores.
I first found out about these 'couple's matches' at Inspire (all girls open mat) from Mackenzie Dern . Mackenzie and boyfriend Augusto Tanquinho will be taking on Davi Ramos and girlfriend Marina Riberio this month.
Tanquinho takes on Davi first. Mackenzie and Marina take to the mat next, and rather than start with a zero-zero score, they pick up with the points where the men left off. If the first match ended in submission, the girlfriend of the beaten combatant will have to get the tapout in order to even the score.
With more and more couples popping up in the Jiu Jitsu and MMA scene these matches may become more and more popular.
Dating within' the gym used to be a big NO but, by looking at the growing numbers of the BBJ relationships, it seems to be more of a relationship builder then a bad idea. Being able to understand the long hours and dedication is defiantly a huge plus! Having someone to "try out" new moves on, knowing which gi can go in the dryer and which can't, understanding who scored the points, why you wake up in a head and arm choke, why "date night" has to be at a place showing the fights, why your crying in the shower after an off night, why your boyfriend/girlfriend has "hickies" in strange places, why your submitting house-hold objects or putting the family pet in a triangle (or your child) haha (you know you've all done it)!!
Here's to you all! Keep making it work!
I also wanted to mention Mackenzie received her black belt today! Awesome to see females progressing in BJJ! Congrats Mackenzie!
couldn't leave this couple out ;)
